LENA LEARNS THE WORLD

A.J Raino, Author

What happens when curiosity is louder than manners—and questions can’t be ignored?

While spending spring break with her grandma, Lena’s bold, sassy personality gets her into a little trouble when she jumps into grown-up conversations with grandma’s friends. But that same confidence shines when Lena spots her favorite pop star during a mall interview—right in front of her!

As Lena listens closely, she becomes puzzled when the pop star talks about herself as more than one person. 🤔
Lena can’t help but wonder:
“Why would anyone think of themselves as more than one person?”  Instead of brushing her curiosity aside, Lena does what she does best—she asks questions.

Through laughter, surprises, and heartfelt moments, young readers learn that questions lead to understanding—and that being yourself is something to be proud of.

Book Excerpt

The spring break week was winding down. Friday morning, Lena was at her grandma’s house in her mom’s old room, going through her trunk of clothes and looking through a box of family pictures. She got thirsty. She went through the dining room, where Grandma and the ladies were at the dining room table, playing cards.

“Hello, Ms. Rae. Hello, Ms. Dawn,” Lena said, walking by the dining table.
“Hey, baby,” Ms. Dawn said.
Ms. Dawn had long silver hair wrapped in a bun to the back of her head. She dressed in stylish clothes, stone jewelry, and wears a nice flower perfume. She was a nice lady. Ms. Rae gave Lena a head nod. Ms. Rae had black and white hair with one braid around her head. She was loud when she talked. Her clothes were also loud. She wore soft jumper suits in flashy colors, like bright red and neon green.

“Come on, ladies. Lay your cards down so I can get this book,” Ms. Rae said, putting down an ace of clubs. They are playing a card game called Spades.
“Did you know Catherine’s grandson, Devon, got fired from his job for stealing a pair of earrings?” Ms. Dawn asked the ladies. The ladies shook their heads in disappointment of the news.
“What does he need with earrings?” Grandma asked.
“Catherine said it was for a girl, but I think it was for him. He wears stuff like that, and pants down pass his underwear,” Ms. Rae answered.

“Boys should not wear their pants like that,” Lena added.
The ladies looked over at Lena standing in the kitchen, opening a bottle of juice.
“You do not need to be listening to adult conversation,” Ms. Rae said, shuffling the cards in her hands.
“I know what you are talking about. Why can’t I say something?” Lena inquired, walking to the table.
“Little girl. This is not a conversation for a child. Go on to the back,” Ms. Rae said, staring at Lena.
“Go on to the room,” Grandma said softly. Lena began walking out the dining room. Before she got out the dining room, she turned around.
